The trekking seasons at a glance

Plan a Morocco trip around the mountains and the calendar matters more than anywhere else in the country. The High Atlas swings from snow-locked winter peaks to baking summer foothills, and the right month depends on whether you want a summit, a green-valley traverse or a gentle day walk from Imlil.

  • Spring (Apr–Jun): the classic trekking window — melting snowfields, wildflowers, rushing streams and long daylight on the Toubkal approach.
  • Summer (Jul–Aug): snow-free high routes but hot, dusty lower trails; start at dawn, finish by midday, and the cities below bake at 40°C+.
  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): the second prime window — stable, dry weather, firm trails and golden light across the Berber villages.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Toubkal under snow is a genuine mountaineering objective requiring crampons, ice axe and a qualified guide; the lower valleys and cities stay mild and sunny.

When to go for each kind of trek

For a non-technical Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m) ascent, mid-May to October is the realistic snow-free window — though late-lying snow above the refuge can demand crampons into May some years. For the long M'Goun massif and village-to-village traverses, June and September are ideal, when the high passes are clear and the gîtes are open. For Ourika and Setti Fatma day walks, almost any dry month works, though spring brings the fullest waterfalls.

Winter ascents (December to February) are the preserve of trekkers with snow skills or a winter mountain guide: the Toubkal refuge stays open, but the summit scree turns to hard snow and ice and avalanche awareness becomes essential. If you simply want snowy scenery without the mountaineering, base in Imlil and walk the lower tracks while the peaks glitter above.

Things that move the dates

Spring melt (late February into March) leaves trails muddy and stream crossings high and cold — beautiful, but pick your dates with care. Ramadan shifts roughly eleven days earlier each year; guides and muleteers still work, though daytime energy in the villages dips before iftar, so a slightly later start can be considerate. Book guides, mules and refuge bunks well ahead for the May and September peaks, when the Toubkal refuge fills fast.

Frequently asked

What is the best month to trek the High Atlas?

May, June, September and October are the sweet spots — snow has cleared from the main Toubkal trails, the weather is stable, and daytime walking temperatures are comfortable while nights stay cool. May valleys are greenest; October light is the most golden.

When is it too hot to trek in Morocco?

July and August roast the lower foothills and the cities below (Marrakech and the south routinely top 38–45°C). High routes above 2,500 m stay walkable, but you must start at dawn and be off the exposed slopes by midday. Many trekkers simply save the big walks for spring or autumn.

Can you trek the Atlas in winter?

Yes, but a winter Toubkal ascent is genuine mountaineering — crampons, ice axe and a guide with snow experience are required. The lower Imlil and Ourika valley walks remain doable, with mild, sunny days and the peaks under fresh snow above you.
