Why Marrakech
Marrakech is the launch point for trekking the High Atlas: from the ochre walls it is barely an hour's drive to Imlil and the foot of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), North Africa's highest peak. Most walkers fly in here, acclimatise for a night or two, then climb into the mountains — and return to the same riad for a hammam and a tagine when the boots come off. The UNESCO medina, the Jemaa el-Fnaa, the Koutoubia minaret and the Majorelle garden fill the days on either side of a mountain itinerary, and the Atlas ridge is visible on the southern horizon from almost every rooftop in town.
What to see
Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk and the souks of Semmarine and Mouassine — the place to buy a scarf, a headlamp battery or a last tagine before heading for the hills.
Cool palace courtyards and zellige tilework — a gentle acclimatisation day before the altitude of Imlil and Toubkal.
The cobalt-blue Majorelle garden, then a rooftop terrace where the snow line of the High Atlas fills the southern skyline.
An hour south the road climbs into Berber country — Asni market, walnut orchards and Imlil at 1,740m, the staging village for the Toubkal ascent.
The closest Atlas day walk: Berber villages, the Setti Fatma waterfalls and lunch with your feet in the river.

One or two nights is plenty to shake off the flight, sort kit and acclimatise at low altitude before driving up to Imlil. Many walkers add a day or two on the return to recover with a hammam and the medina at an unhurried pace.
It is the natural one — Imlil and the Toubkal trailhead are about an hour's drive south, the Ourika valley closer still. Permits, guides and mules are all arranged from here, which is why almost every Atlas itinerary starts and finishes in the city.
March–May and September–November give warm days (22–28°C) and cool evenings — and the same window is prime trekking season in the mountains above. June–August can reach 40°C in the city; December–February is mild below but snowbound on the high peaks.
