Why Essaouira

When the boots come off after Toubkal, Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is where trekkers go to let the altitude and the trail dust wash off. Three hours west of Marrakech, this breezy fortress town trades thin mountain air for salt wind and sea level: its 18th-century ramparts have stood in for Astapor in Game of Thrones, its blue-and-white medina is small, flat and far calmer than Marrakech, and its long beach draws kite-surfers all year. It is also the head of the argan-oil road and the route to the oyster lagoons of Oualidia — gentle, horizontal days to balance a week of climbing.

What to see

Highlights of Essaouira.

01

The Skala sea ramparts

Portuguese-built cannon walls braced against the Atlantic swell — a flat, breezy walk that stood in for the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.

02

The fishing port & seafood grills

Pick from the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — the post-trek reward meal, and Morocco's freshest seafood without argument.

03

Argan cooperatives

Stop at a women's co-op on the road down from the mountains and watch argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.

04

Sidi Kaouki & Oualidia

Long empty beaches to the south for a barefoot recovery stroll, and an oyster-farming lagoon to the north.

FAQ

Essaouira — common questions.

Is Essaouira a good place to recover after a High Atlas trek?+

It is one of the best — flat, calm and at sea level, the opposite of everything your legs just did in the mountains. The 3-hour drive from Marrakech makes a day trip rushed, so build in two nights to properly unwind before flying home.

Can you swim in Essaouira?+

You can, but it is windy and the Atlantic stays cool year-round — bracing after the cold of altitude rather than tropical. For warmer, calmer water head south to Sidi Kaouki or on to Agadir.
