Why Sahara & Merzouga

After days on the ridgelines above Imlil, the Sahara is the perfect contrast: where the High Atlas is cold granite and altitude, Erg Chebbi is warm sand and horizon. This 22km field of orange dunes near the village of Merzouga rises up to 150m above the surrounding hammada, and most trekkers tack it on before or after the mountains rather than as a walk in itself — this is not a summit, it is the soft landing. The road in crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n'Tichka pass and threads the Dadès and Todra gorges over roughly 9 hours from Marrakech (or a one-hour flight to Errachidia, then 2h by car). The payoff is a night in a tented camp with Berber hosts under a sky with no light for hundreds of kilometres.

What to see

Highlights of Sahara & Merzouga.

01

Camel caravan into the dunes

A 60–90 minute ride from the village to camp — the desert's version of a trail-in, ideally timed for late afternoon when the dunes turn copper.

02

Tented camp under the stars

After the spartan refuges of the high mountains, canvas suites with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, candlelit dinner and gnaoua musicians around the fire feel like real luxury.

03

Sunrise scramble up the high dune

The desert's only real climb: wake at 5:30, work 150m up soft sand, and watch the sun lift over Algeria — a gentler summit than Toubkal but no less memorable.

04

Erg Chigaga (the wilder alternative)

Further south, reached from M'Hamid by 4x4 — quieter, fewer camps and harder to get to. Our pick for trekkers who want the dunes as remote as the mountains they just left.

FAQ

Sahara & Merzouga — common questions.

Should I add the Sahara before or after my High Atlas trek?+

Either works, but most walkers do the mountains first and the desert after, as a warm wind-down for tired legs. The real dunes (Erg Chebbi / Chigaga) are 9 hours from Marrakech, so allow at least three days; the Agafay stone desert is a closer day-trip stand-in but it is not the Sahara.

Is it too hot in summer?+

July–August daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and camps close or move — and that is also the worst window for trekking the exposed high passes. October–April is the season for both; March and November pair beautifully with the mountains.

Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga for a post-trek night?+

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible with more camp choices — the easier add-on to a mountain trip. Erg Chigaga is wilder, quieter and needs a 4x4, better suited to trekkers who want the same remoteness in the sand that they had on the ridges.
