Why Chefchaouen

For walkers who picture Morocco only through the High Atlas and Toubkal, Chefchaouen (Arabic: شفشاون, also spelled Chaouen) is the northern surprise: a blue-washed medina pinned to the flank of the western Rif mountains at roughly 564 m, with cedar-and-fir ridgelines rising straight out of the back lanes. It lies about 113 km south of Tangier and 200 km north of Fes, founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ben Rashid as a Berber-Andalusi fortress against Portuguese expansion from Ceuta and later settled by Muslim and Jewish refugees expelled from Spain after 1492. Trekkers treat it as the trailhead for Talassemtane National Park and the Akchour gorges, then return to its lime-painted alleys to rest tired legs. The famous indigo wash is most often credited to the Jewish community that arrived in the 1930s, and residents still repaint twice a year in lime-based blue. The town holds roughly 43,000 inhabitants and stayed closed to non-Muslims until Spanish troops arrived in 1920.

What to see

Highlights of Chefchaouen.

01

Plaza Uta el-Hammam & the Kasbah

The shaded square below the trail-worn lanes, anchored by the red-ochre Kasbah (built 1471) with its Andalusian garden, small ethnographic museum and rooftop views toward the Rif ridgelines.

02

Ras el-Maa spring

The cold mountain spring at the medina's upper edge, fed by the slopes above town, where local women still wash laundry; the source of the river that once powered Chaouen's mills and a natural start point for the climb out of the valley.

03

Spanish Mosque viewpoint

A 30–40 minute uphill leg-stretcher east of the medina to the 1920s Bouzaafar mosque — an easy first hike that earns the iconic sunset panorama over the blue rooftops and the wooded hills behind.

04

Akchour & God's Bridge

The headline trek: a 30 km drive into Talassemtane National Park, then a 2–3 hour walk along the Oued Farda to the lower cascades, or a longer push to the natural rock arch of Pont de Dieu through fir-and-cedar gorge country.

FAQ

Chefchaouen — common questions.

How long should I spend in Chefchaouen if I want to hike?+

Two nights lets you do it properly: arrive midday, warm up with the golden-hour climb to the Spanish Mosque, sleep over, then give a full half-day to the Akchour cascades in Talassemtane before driving on after lunch. One night only covers the medina, not the trails.

Is Chefchaouen a day trip from Tangier?+

It can be — 113 km, roughly 2 hours each way — but a day trip arrives with the coaches around 11h and leaves before dusk, which leaves no time for the Rif hikes and misses the two hours when the blue lanes are most beautiful. Stay over if you want the gorge walks.

How hard is the Akchour hike?+

The lower cascades route is a moderate 2–3 hour walk along the Oued Farda on a clear riverside path, fine for anyone reasonably active in trail shoes. Pont de Dieu and the upper falls add steeper, longer ground — start early and carry water in summer.

Why is Chefchaouen painted blue, and is it a good trekking base?+

The most cited story is that the Jewish community who settled here in the 1930s painted the walls blue for the sky and heaven; others credit the Andalusian founders or say the colour deters mosquitoes. Either way, its position on the edge of Talassemtane makes it the obvious base for Rif mountain walking, and a calm, alcohol-light town to recover in afterwards.
