Why Fes
Fes is the deep-history contrast to the High Atlas: where a trek is all ridgelines and silence, Fes el-Bali is 9,000 alleys of noise, leather and cedar smoke. Founded in 789 AD, the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities is the place trekkers add before or after the mountains for a few days of tanneries, weavers and the bookbinders of the Karaouine — and a soft bed inside the walls. It also anchors the Middle Atlas: the cedar forests of Azrou and Ifrane lie an hour south, on the road that climbs toward the eastern peaks.
What to see
Walk the Talaa Kebira from Bab Boujloud down to the Karaouine — the world's oldest continuously operating university (859 AD), and a world away from a mountain trail.
The famous pigment vats from a leather-shop terrace, best in the morning light — the rest day's antidote to weeks of trekking simplicity.
Two 14th-century Marinid madrasas where carved cedar, stucco and zellige reach their finest — the craft heritage behind every painted Berber door in the Atlas.
Fes is the jumping-off point for Ifrane, Azrou and the cedar forests an hour south — easy walks and Barbary macaques on the way to or from the city.
Watch cobalt-and-white Fassi ceramics thrown, glazed and fired across the river from the medina.

Very naturally as a cultural bookend. The Middle Atlas cedar forests and the eastern High Atlas are reached from Fes, so many walkers spend two or three days here decompressing in the medina before or after time on the trail.
Strongly recommended for at least the first day — the 9,000 alleys will lose you. After the route-finding of a mountain traverse, it is a pleasure to follow a local historian instead of a map for once.
The Middle Atlas starts an hour south at Ifrane and Azrou; the eastern High Atlas crossroads at Midelt is about three hours on the N13. For the High Atlas proper and Toubkal, transfer or fly to Marrakech and start from Imlil.
