Best Time to Trek the High Atlas

The High Atlas can be trekked most of the year, but conditions change sharply with season and altitude — from flower-filled spring valleys to snow-bound winter summits. Choosing the right window for your route matters. Here is an honest season-by-season guide.

6 experiences

The best of High Atlas

01Best

Spring (April–June) — prime season

Valleys are green and full of blossom, days are warm and the high passes gradually clear of snow. Late spring is ideal for the Toubkal ascent and valley treks alike, though high snow can linger into May after a heavy winter.

02Best

Autumn (September–October) — stable & clear

After the summer heat, autumn brings stable, clear weather, comfortable temperatures and quiet trails — excellent for both summit climbs and multi-day valley circuits before the first winter snows.

03Good

Summer (July–August) — hot, go high

Marrakech and the foothills are very hot, but the high mountains stay pleasant, so summer is a good time to be up at altitude. Start early, carry plenty of water, and watch for occasional afternoon thunderstorms.

04Experienced only

Winter (November–March) — snow & ice

The high peaks, including Toubkal, hold snow and ice and become true winter climbs needing crampons, an ice axe and the skills or a qualified guide to use them. Lower valley walks remain possible and beautifully quiet.

05Tip

Match the season to the route

Valley treks (Aït Bougmez, the Ourika and Mizane valleys) work across three seasons; the Toubkal summit is best late spring to autumn; the long M'Goun traverse suits summer and early autumn when its high ground is clear.

06Good to know

Ramadan & local rhythm

During Ramadan, guides and muleteers may fast, which can affect daily pace and meal timing. Trekking still runs smoothly, but it is worth being aware and planning gentler days.

Frequently asked

When is the best time to trek the High Atlas?

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the prime seasons, with warm days, clearing or stable conditions and beautiful scenery. Summer is good at altitude despite hot foothills, and winter is for experienced, equipped trekkers only on the high peaks.

Can you climb Toubkal in winter?

Yes, but in winter Toubkal is a technical climb: the upper mountain holds snow and ice from around November to April and requires crampons, an ice axe and the experience to use them, or a qualified winter guide.

Is summer too hot for Atlas trekking?

The foothills and Marrakech are very hot in summer, but the high mountains stay pleasant, so summer is a good time to trek at altitude. Start early, carry plenty of water and be alert to occasional afternoon thunderstorms.
