Climbing Mount Toubkal: A Trekking Guide

At 4,167 metres, Jbel Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and the most popular high-mountain trek in Morocco. It is a non-technical climb in summer but a serious one in winter, and altitude is the real challenge. Here is an honest guide to the standard two-day ascent from Imlil.

The best of High Atlas

01Route

The standard route

Most climbers follow the two-day route from Imlil (about 1,740 m): a 4–6 hour walk up the Mizane valley via Sidi Chamharouch to the refuges at around 3,200 m on day one, then a pre-dawn summit push and return on day two.

02Accommodation

The refuges

Two huts sit below the final climb at roughly 3,200 m: the long-standing CAF Refuge du Toubkal (Neltner) and the neighbouring Refuge Mouflons. Both offer dorm beds and meals; book ahead in peak season.

03Route

Summit day

From the refuges it is a steep 3–4 hour climb up scree and the south cwm to the summit ridge, then the final stretch to the metal pyramid marking the top — with views across the High Atlas and, on clear days, toward the Sahara.

04Preparation

Fitness & altitude

No technical skills are needed in summer, but good fitness helps and altitude affects everyone. Going slowly, hydrating and ideally spending a night acclimatising at Imlil first all reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

05Logistics

Guides & mules

A licensed mountain guide is required for Toubkal and strongly advisable for safety and navigation; mules or porters can carry bags to the refuge. Both are arranged easily through Imlil operators.

06Safety

Winter is different

From roughly November to April the upper mountain holds snow and ice, turning the ascent into a true winter climb needing crampons, an ice axe and the experience to use them, or a qualified winter guide. Do not attempt it unequipped.

Frequently asked

How high is Mount Toubkal?

Jbel Toubkal is 4,167 metres, the highest peak in North Africa and in the Arab world, located in the High Atlas south of Marrakech.

How many days do you need to climb Toubkal?

The standard ascent takes two days from Imlil: a walk up to the refuges at around 3,200 m on day one, then a pre-dawn summit and descent on day two. Adding an acclimatisation day in Imlil makes it safer and more comfortable.

How long does it take to climb Toubkal?

Two days for most people. Day one is a walk of around five to six hours from Imlil (1,740 m) up to the refuges at about 3,200 m. On day two you leave before dawn, reach the summit in roughly three to four hours, then descend all the way to Imlil.

Can you climb Toubkal in one day?

Very fit, well-acclimatised hikers sometimes do it from Imlil in one very long day, but that means about 2,400 m of ascent and the same descent, with a higher risk of altitude sickness. We recommend two days, or three with an acclimatisation day.

Is Toubkal the highest mountain in Morocco?

Yes. At 4,167 m, Jbel Toubkal is the highest mountain in Morocco, in the Atlas range and in North Africa.
