A gentler, lower-altitude four-day cultural trek east of Toubkal: from the Setti Fatma waterfalls up onto the broad Yagour plateau — famous for its prehistoric rock engravings and summer shepherd camps — then down through the Berber villages of the Imenane and Tacheddirt valleys. Village-to-village walking and mountain life, with no high summit. Moderate high-atlas trekking.

Day 1
Marrakech to Setti Fatma, up the Ourika valley
Drive about 90 minutes from Marrakech up the green Ourika valley to Setti Fatma (around 1,500m). After lunch, an easy afternoon walk up the valley past the famous seven waterfalls and through walnut groves and riverside villages to start gaining height. Overnight in a family-run village gîte.

Day 2
Onto the Yagour plateau and its rock engravings
The biggest day: a steady climb out of the valley onto the broad Yagour plateau (around 2,400–2,700m), a vast summer grazing land dotted with shepherd camps. Search out some of the plateau's prehistoric rock engravings — carved figures, weapons and sun-discs left on the flat stones. Around 5–6 hours of walking on open, rolling ground. Night in a bivouac camp or simple shepherd's shelter on the plateau.

Day 3
Across to the Imenane valley villages
Descend off the western edge of the plateau over a modest pass (under 3,000m) into the Imenane valley, walking village to village among terraced fields, threshing floors and irrigation channels toward the high hamlet of Tacheddirt (around 2,300m). About 5 hours, mostly downhill and across the valley. Overnight in a Berber gîte.

Day 4
Tacheddirt to Imlil and back to Marrakech
A relaxed final morning over the Tizi n'Tamatert (2,279m) down to Imlil (1,740m), the main Toubkal trailhead, with a mint-tea stop in a Berber home. Then the short transfer back to Marrakech, arriving by mid-afternoon.

Practical notes
- This is moderate trekking with no 4,000m summit — most of the route sits between roughly 1,500m and 2,700m, with the Yagour plateau the high point — so it suits fit walkers who want Berber village life and culture rather than a peak.
- Best from roughly April to October; the Yagour plateau is high, open and exposed, and can hold snow and be bitterly cold and windswept in the colder months.
- A local mountain guide leads the route and mules carry the main bags between villages; nights are a mix of family-run gîtes and a bivouac or shepherd's shelter on the plateau, so come prepared for one basic, cold night at altitude.
- The plateau is exposed with little shade and few water points, so carry plenty of water, sun protection and a warm layer even in summer.
- It pairs naturally with a Toubkal summit afterwards (Jbel Toubkal, 4,167m), since the trek finishes at Imlil, the main Toubkal trailhead.
Frequently asked
What are the Yagour plateau rock engravings?
The Yagour plateau, a high summer grazing land in the High Atlas east of Toubkal, holds one of Morocco's richest concentrations of prehistoric rock art — engravings carved into the flat stones showing human figures, weapons, animals and sun-disc motifs, thought to date back thousands of years. A local guide helps you find them among the open pastures.
Is the Berber Villages & Valleys trek suitable for beginners?
Largely yes. It is moderate village-to-village walking with no high summit, mostly between about 1,500m and 2,700m, so it suits fit first-time trekkers who want culture and scenery over a peak. The main efforts are the climb onto the Yagour plateau and a few hours of walking each day, plus one basic night camping or in a shepherd's shelter at altitude.
How is this different from the Imlil and Aït Bougmez village treks?
It covers a different corner of the High Atlas — the Ourika valley and the wide Yagour plateau east of Toubkal — with a strong cultural focus on the plateau's prehistoric rock engravings and summer shepherd life, before dropping into the Imenane valley to Tacheddirt and Imlil. The Imlil trek stays in the Toubkal foothills and the Aït Bougmez trek is in the central Atlas, so this one adds genuinely new ground and a distinct archaeological highlight.
