Day by day

Your 4-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Marrakech to Aït Bougmez, valley walk

A long scenic transfer (around 5–6 hours) over the Atlas passes to the Aït Bougmez valley (about 1,800m). After lunch, an easy afternoon walk between the terraced fields and mud-brick villages of the valley floor to settle in and stretch your legs. Overnight in a village gîte.

    • Aït Bougmez 'Happy Valley' (~1,800m)
    • Terraced fields
    • Mud-brick villages
  2. 2

    Day 2

Sidi Moussa granary and side valleys

A moderate day climbing the conical hill crowned by the old collective granary (agadir) of Sidi Moussa for a wide view over the whole valley, then on through smaller hamlets and irrigation channels. Around 4–5 hours of walking on good paths.

    • Sidi Moussa granary (agadir)
    • Valley panorama
    • Berber hamlets
  3. 3

    Day 3

Up to the high pastures and a pass

The biggest day: a steady climb out of the valley to the high summer pastures (azib) and a pass on the shoulder of the range, with the M'Goun massif on the skyline. Expect 5–6 hours over rougher ground before descending back toward the valley for the night.

    • High summer pastures (azib)
    • Shepherd country
    • M'Goun ridge views
  4. 4

    Day 4

Final valley morning and return to Marrakech

A relaxed last morning visiting a village and its weekly rhythms — walnut and apple terraces, a tea stop in a family home — then the long transfer back over the Atlas to Marrakech, arriving by evening.

    • Walnut & apple terraces
    • Tea in a Berber home
    • Atlas crossing back to Marrakech

Good to know

Practical notes

  • This is moderate trekking with no 4,000m summit — most of it sits between roughly 1,800m and 2,800m — so it suits fit walkers who want Berber valley life rather than a peak.
  • Best from late spring to autumn (roughly April–October); the access roads and high pastures can be snowbound and cold in winter.
  • A local mountain guide leads the route and mules can carry the main bags between villages; nights are in simple family-run gîtes.
  • Aït Bougmez is remote — the road in from Marrakech is long and winding — so it rewards travellers who value quiet over convenience, and it pairs naturally with the longer M'Goun traverse.

Frequently asked

Why is Aït Bougmez called the 'Happy Valley'?

Aït Bougmez is a fertile, green valley in the central High Atlas, watered for irrigated terraces of grain, walnuts and apples, with traditional mud-brick Berber villages. That unusual greenness and settled valley life earned it the nickname the 'Happy Valley'.

Is the Aït Bougmez trek hard?

It is moderate rather than hard. You walk a few hours a day on good valley paths with one bigger pass day, mostly between about 1,800m and 2,800m, so there is no high-altitude summit and it suits fit first-time trekkers. The main challenge is the long, winding drive in.

Can I combine Aït Bougmez with climbing M'Goun?

Yes. Aït Bougmez is the usual gateway to the M'Goun massif, so this gentler valley circuit can be extended into the longer M'Goun traverse and summit (Jbel M'Goun, 4,068m) for trekkers who want to add a high, remote peak — we adjust the plan to your fitness and days.
