An easy, non-summit two-day Atlas short break from Marrakech: the green Ourika valley with the Setti Fatma waterfalls scramble and Berber villages on day one, then up to Oukaïmeden — Morocco's main ski resort in winter and a cool, quiet mountain village in summer — on day two. Gentle High Atlas scenery, no high trek.

Day 1
Marrakech to the Ourika valley & Setti Fatma
Drive roughly an hour to an hour and a half south from Marrakech up the green Ourika valley, following the river past riverside cafés, walnut groves and Berber villages. At Setti Fatma (around 1,500m), take the short but rocky scramble up the gorge towards the seven waterfalls — a genuine little hike over boulders, so proper shoes matter. If your timing falls on a Monday, the Ourika souk near Tnine-Ourika is worth a stop. Overnight in the valley or higher up at Oukaïmeden.
- Ourika valley & riverside cafés
- Setti Fatma seven waterfalls scramble (~1,500m)
- Berber villages (Monday souk if timed)

Day 2
Up to Oukaïmeden, then back to Marrakech
Continue about an hour higher up the road to Oukaïmeden (around 2,600m). In winter (broadly December to March, snow permitting) this is Morocco's main ski resort; in summer it is a cool, quiet mountain village with alpine air, easy walks, big views over the High Atlas and prehistoric rock carvings on the slopes nearby. Take an easy stroll, soak up the height and the cooler air, then descend back to Marrakech, arriving by the afternoon or evening.
- Oukaïmeden (~2,600m)
- Winter ski resort / summer cool-mountain village
- Easy walks, big views & nearby rock carvings

Practical notes
- This is an easy-to-moderate short break, not a high trek — the only real walking is the rocky Setti Fatma waterfall scramble and gentle strolls at Oukaïmeden, so it suits families and casual walkers.
- Honest drive times: Marrakech to the Ourika valley is roughly 1–1.5 hours, and the road on up to Oukaïmeden adds about another hour of mountain driving.
- Seasons: the Ourika waterfalls run fullest in spring with the snowmelt; Oukaïmeden is a ski resort in winter (roughly December–March, snow permitting) and a cool, walkable mountain village the rest of the year.
- The Setti Fatma cascades involve real boulder scrambling on rocky, sometimes wet ground, so wear grippy footwear and take care — it is short but not a smooth path.
- Even in summer Oukaïmeden sits high at about 2,600m, so bring a warm layer and sun protection; mountain weather can change quickly.
Frequently asked
Is Ourika and Oukaïmeden a hard trek?
No — it is an easy, non-summit Atlas short break rather than a serious trek. The only proper bit of walking is the short, rocky scramble up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls; the rest is riverside cafés, Berber villages and gentle strolls at Oukaïmeden, so it suits families and casual walkers.
How far is Oukaïmeden from Marrakech?
Marrakech to the Ourika valley is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road, and continuing up to Oukaïmeden (around 2,600m) adds about another hour of mountain driving. It is comfortably reached as a short two-day break.
Can you ski at Oukaïmeden?
Yes, in winter. Oukaïmeden is Morocco's main ski resort, with lifts and pistes when there is snow — broadly December to March, depending on the year. In the warmer months it becomes a cool, quiet mountain village for easy walks and big High Atlas views instead.
When are the Setti Fatma waterfalls best?
They are fullest in spring, when the High Atlas snowmelt feeds the river. They flow year-round but are at their most impressive after the winter snows; whatever the season, the scramble up to them is rocky, so wear proper shoes.
