Atlas Waterfalls & Cascades

The Atlas mountains are laced with rivers fed by melting snow, and where those rivers tumble over the rock they form some of Morocco's finest waterfalls. From the seven cascades above Setti Fatma in the Ourika valley to the great curtain of Ouzoud and the natural rock bridge of Imi n'Ifri, these falls reward a short hike with cool spray, swimming pools and dramatic scenery. They are at their most powerful in spring, when snowmelt swells the streams. Here is a guide to the best Atlas waterfalls and cascades and how to reach them.

The best of High Atlas

01Waterfall

Setti Fatma's seven cascades

At the head of the Ourika valley, the village of Setti Fatma is the gateway to a chain of seven waterfalls climbing the hillside. A rocky path with bridges leads to the first and busiest cascade in 30–45 minutes; the higher falls are steeper, quieter and reached on rougher ground.

02Waterfall

Ouzoud Falls

On the edge of the Middle Atlas near Azilal, the Ouzoud Falls are the tallest in Morocco, dropping around 110 metres in a series of curtains into a green gorge. Paths wind down through olive groves past viewpoints, and Barbary macaques live in the trees around the rim.

03Geology

Imi n'Ifri natural bridge

Near Demnate, Imi n'Ifri is a huge natural rock arch carved by the Mahsar river, where the water disappears beneath a vast stone bridge. A short trail descends into the cool, cave-like gorge, home to swirling flocks of choughs, making it one of the Atlas's most unusual water features.

04Swimming

Swimming pools below the falls

Several Atlas cascades feed natural pools that are cool and inviting in summer. The plunge pools at the foot of Ouzoud and the rock pools along the Setti Fatma path are popular spots for a bracing swim; the water is cold, so take care and check depth before jumping.

05Hiking

The hike to reach them

Reaching the falls is part of the appeal: most involve a short, rocky walk rather than a roadside view. Wear shoes with grip, as the rock by the water stays wet and slippery, and allow extra time and care on the steeper upper sections at Setti Fatma.

06Highlight

Ourika valley cafes by the water

Below Setti Fatma, the Ourika valley is lined with simple cafes whose tables sit right in the stream, where you can eat tagine with your feet near the cool water. It is the classic, relaxed end to a waterfall walk and a favourite escape from the Marrakech heat.

07Seasons

Best season: spring snowmelt

The falls are most spectacular in spring, roughly March to May, when melting snow from the high peaks swells the rivers and the cascades run full and loud. By late summer some shrink, while spring also brings green hillsides and wildflowers to the valleys.

08Wildlife

Barbary macaques at Ouzoud

The wooded gorge around Ouzoud is home to wild Barbary macaques, often seen along the trails and viewpoints. Watch them at a respectful distance and avoid feeding them, both for their health and your own safety, as they can be bold around picnickers.

09Logistics

Guides & local muleteers

Local guides are easily hired at Setti Fatma and Ouzoud and add safety and route-finding on the rockier paths, as well as knowledge of the best viewpoints and pools. At Setti Fatma, the scramble to the upper falls in particular is more enjoyable with a guide.

10Access

Day trips from Marrakech

Setti Fatma in the Ourika valley is about 90 minutes from Marrakech and makes an easy half- to full-day trip. Ouzoud is farther, roughly two and a half to three hours away near Azilal, so it is usually visited as a long full-day excursion or an overnight.
