Why Agafay Desert
The Agafay is the easiest way to put the High Atlas at your feet for an evening: a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape just 40 minutes south-west of Marrakech, with the snow-capped wall of the range — Toubkal and its neighbours — filling the horizon at golden hour. It is not the Sahara and it is not the mountains: it is a stone desert of khaki hills, honestly a backdrop rather than a destination in itself. But for walkers with a spare night either side of a trek, a lantern-lit camp, a short walk over the ridges and the Atlas turning pink at dusk make a memorable, low-effort bracket to the harder days up the valley — without the nine-hour haul to the dunes.
What to see
Lantern-lit camps serving Moroccan dinners as the High Atlas glows pink on the horizon — the ridge you may have just trekked, seen end-on from the plain.
Short walks and camel rides across the khaki hills at golden hour, easy on legs recovering from the high passes and gentle enough for first-timers and families.
Faster options across the rocky tracks for those wanting more than a stroll on a rest day.
An en-suite tented camp for a stargazing night with the Atlas as silhouette — the soft contrast to a refuge bunk at 3,200m.

If you can't spare the days for the Sahara, yes — it delivers a desert sunset, a tented camp and an easy walk 40 minutes from Marrakech, with the Atlas range you have trekked filling the skyline. Just know it is rolling rocky hills rather than sand dunes, and a backdrop rather than a trek in its own right.
No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand. It's beautiful at sunset and very convenient to the trailhead, but for classic dunes you need Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or Erg Chigaga, and for the high country, Imlil and Toubkal.
