Why Ourika Valley

For walkers based in Marrakech, the Ourika is the High Atlas at its most accessible: a green river valley climbing south into the range in barely an hour, where the first Berber footpaths begin almost at the roadside. It is the natural warm-up before Imlil and Toubkal — a day to break in the boots, test the legs at modest altitude and learn the rhythm of an Atlas trail among walnut terraces and irrigated gardens. At its head the village of Setti Fatma is the trailhead for a scrambling walk to seven cascades, the first reached in half an hour and the higher ones earning a proper hour of rough rock above the treeline. Riverside kitchens set their tables in the running water for the descent, and the Monday souk at Tnine Ourika brings the muleteers and shepherds of the upper valley down to trade.

What to see

Highlights of Ourika Valley.

01

The Setti Fatma seven cascades

The valley's headline trek: a scrambling climb above the village past seven waterfalls — the first an easy 30 minutes, the upper falls a steeper hour of rock that rewards the effort with the quiet upper gorge.

02

Berber footpaths & terraced gardens

Mule tracks thread between the villages above the river, past saffron and herb terraces — a gentle acclimatisation walk and the easiest introduction to High Atlas trail-walking from the city.

03

Riverside trail lunch

Tables set in the shallows of the Ourika for tagine and grilled meats with your boots off and feet in the cold meltwater — the classic reward at the end of a day on the path.

04

Monday Berber souk at Tnine Ourika

The weekly market where the upper-valley shepherds and muleteers come down to trade — a working Atlas souk far from the tourist circuit.

FAQ

Ourika Valley — common questions.

Is the Ourika Valley a good acclimatisation walk before Toubkal?+

It is the natural one — the closest High Atlas valley to Marrakech, with gentle Berber footpaths and the Setti Fatma cascade scramble to test the legs at modest altitude before driving on to Imlil. Many walkers spend a day here first to break in boots and settle into the rhythm of the trail.

How hard is the Setti Fatma waterfalls trek?+

The first cascade is an easy 30-minute walk above the village; reaching the higher falls means a steeper, scrambling hour over rough rock — fine for anyone reasonably active in proper trail shoes. The current in the pools can be strong after rain or snowmelt, so take the river crossings carefully.
