Why Meknes
Meknes makes a perfect cultural breather on the way to or from the Atlas — a day of deep history with no altitude attached. Too often skipped between Fes and the coast, it is the most underrated of Morocco's four imperial cities: built by the 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail to rival Versailles, it keeps colossal monumental gates, the vaulted Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a lived-in medina that carries a fraction of the crowds. Thirty minutes on lie the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss — a layered heritage stop to balance the silence and effort of the mountains.
What to see
Often called the finest monumental gate in Morocco — a sweep of green-and-white zellige and carved stone framing the old imperial city.
Moulay Ismail's cavernous vaulted granaries and stables, set beside a vast reflecting reservoir dug to keep the city watered through any siege.
A UNESCO site of standing arches, floor mosaics and olive groves — the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, an easy half-hour from the gates.
A sacred whitewashed town spilling across two hills, holding the tomb of the founder of Morocco's first dynasty.

Yes — it is the quietest and most relaxed of the imperial cities, heavy on monumental gates and granaries but light on the medina crush of Fes. Paired with Volubilis it makes a superb low-effort culture day between stretches in the mountains.
