Why Asilah
After the Akchour gorges and the forested ridges of Talassemtane, Asilah is where walkers let the Rif trail out of their legs: forty minutes south of Tangier, it is the prettiest small town on the northern coast — a compact, whitewashed medina wrapped in Portuguese ramparts, with cobalt-blue doors, bougainvillea and the Atlantic breaking against the walls. There is no climbing here, and that is the point: it is the flat, sea-level counterpoint that slots naturally onto the front or back of a northern trekking loop (Tangier, Chefchaouen, the Rif, then the coast). Each summer an arts festival covers the lanes with fresh murals, and the town stays calm and creative year-round — an easy place to recover before the journey home.

Walls repainted each summer during the Asilah Arts Festival, making the medina an open-air gallery.
A long sweep of sand a short ride south, reached by horse-cart in summer — a barefoot recovery walk after the gorges.

Yes — it is flat, calm and at sea level, the opposite of the Akchour gorges and the Talassemtane ridges. As the most charming small town on the northern coast, with Portuguese ramparts and a mural-filled medina, it pairs perfectly with Tangier or Chefchaouen at the end of a northern walking loop.
About 45 km, or 40–45 minutes by car or train. It makes an easy half-day trip from Tangier, or a calm overnight by the sea to bracket a Rif trekking itinerary.
