Why Rabat
Rabat is Morocco's seat of government and one of its gentlest cities, which is exactly what makes it such a good buffer at either end of a trek. There are no peaks here — just Almohad ramparts, broad French-era avenues and clean Atlantic light, all UNESCO-listed. The blue-and-white kasbah of the Udayas looks out over the Bou Regreg river mouth, the unfinished Hassan Tower and the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V hold the skyline, and the medina is small, flat and refreshingly free of hustle after the intensity of Marrakech or Fes. An ideal place to find your feet before the mountains, or to let tired legs recover once you are down.
What to see
A 12th-century fortified quarter of blue-washed lanes above the river, with an Andalusian garden and a clifftop café over the Atlantic — a slow, level wander for travel-stiff legs.
The stubby minaret of a mosque never completed, facing the lavishly decorated royal mausoleum kept by mounted sentries.
Roman and Merinid ruins overrun by nesting storks and wild gardens — among the most atmospheric corners in the country, and an easy amble.
A low-pressure medina for carpets and crafts, set against the art-deco and modernist avenues left by the French protectorate.

Yes, particularly as an easy, low-stress bookend. Its UNESCO monuments, the kasbah of the Udayas and the storks of the Chellah fill a rewarding day, and the calm is welcome before the effort of the trail or after it — far gentler than Marrakech or Fes.
One full day covers the kasbah, the Hassan Tower and mausoleum, the Chellah and a turn through the medina. Add a night if you want the riverfront and Atlantic beaches at an unhurried, recovering pace.
