Why Casablanca
For most walkers, the trip begins here. Casablanca holds Morocco's main international airport (CMN), so the long-haul flight tends to touch down on this working Atlantic metropolis before the road or rail leg up to Marrakech and the High Atlas. It is not the postcard Morocco of kasbahs and ridgelines but a modern port city of French-era art-deco facades, a breezy corniche and the vast Hassan II Mosque rising straight off the water. Few trekkers linger, but for those with a spare morning before transferring inland we fold in a proper half-day rather than a blur between terminals.
What to see
The world's third-largest mosque, anchored partly over the Atlantic — and one of the rare ones in Morocco non-Muslims may tour, with guided visits hourly. A grand first hour off the plane.
Place Mohammed V, the weathered French-protectorate apartment blocks and the restored Cinema Rialto — an easy stroll to stretch travel-stiff legs.
The Atlantic boardwalk, beach clubs and the sunset terrace at Rick's Café — sea air before the inland road to the mountains.

For a trekking trip a half-day around the Hassan II Mosque and the art-deco centre is plenty before you move on. Save your nights for Marrakech and the mountain valleys rather than the city.
Casablanca (CMN) carries more long-haul flights, while Marrakech (RAK) sits an hour from the Imlil trailhead. We often book an open-jaw — into CMN and home from RAK — so you arrive easily and fly out close to the mountains.
