Overview
A six-day traverse of the remote M'Goun massif in the central High Atlas, summiting Jbel M'Goun (4,068m) and walking the famous river gorges. Challenging high-altitude trekking far from the crowds; mule-supported camping and gîtes.
Beyond Toubkal lies the wilder, emptier central High Atlas — the M'Goun massif, where Morocco's third-highest summit (Ighil M'Goun, 4,068m) rises above shepherds' pastures and the great limestone canyons of the Aït Bougmez region. This traverse starts in the green 'Happy Valley' of Aït Bougmez, crosses high cols and a long summit ridge, then descends through the dramatic M'Goun gorges where the trail repeatedly fords the river.
This is committing, scenic trekking at altitude with very few other walkers: long days of 5–8 hours, a summit ridge over 4,000m, and nights in mule-supported camps and Berber gîtes. It suits experienced hill-walkers who want big mountains and authentic village life rather than tick-list peaks.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is the M'Goun traverse harder than Toubkal?
It is longer and more remote rather than higher. The summit is slightly lower than Toubkal (4,068m vs 4,167m) but you trek for six days at altitude with long days and river-gorge walking, so a good level of trekking fitness is essential.
Do I get wet feet in the M'Goun gorges?
Yes — the gorge sections cross the river many times. We time the trek for lower water (late spring to autumn) and you bring quick-drying footwear or sandals for the crossings.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate. Expect 2–4 hours of light walking per day and one or two longer driving days. We pace days carefully and stop often.
When should I book?
For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
