Overview

Four moderate days in the green Aït Bougmez 'Happy Valley', staying in Berber gîtes and walking high pastures and side valleys. Moderate trekking at 1,800–2,900m with no summit pressure; mule support throughout.

Aït Bougmez — the 'Happy Valley' — is the most beautiful inhabited valley in the High Atlas: a green ribbon of terraced barley, mud-brick villages and walnut trees at 1,800m, ringed by 3,000m peaks. This four-day trek keeps things gentle and cultural, walking from village to village, up to the marabout shrine on its hilltop, and onto the high pastures (azibs) where shepherds spend the summer, without the demands of a summit climb.

It is moderate trekking — 4–6 hours a day with steady ascents to around 2,900m — ideal for walkers who want immersion in Berber mountain life and big scenery rather than altitude records. You sleep in welcoming family-run gîtes, mules carry the bags, and the pace leaves time for tea and conversation.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is the Aït Bougmez trek a good first multi-day trek?

Excellent for it. It is moderate rather than challenging — daily walking of 4–6 hours and a top altitude around 2,900m, with no summit day — so it suits fit walkers who want a real Atlas experience without high peaks.

Why is it called the Happy Valley?

Aït Bougmez is unusually green and fertile for the High Atlas, with year-round water, terraced fields and a strong, welcoming Berber community — travellers have long nicknamed it the 'Happy Valley'.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
