Overview

A five-day acclimatised circuit of the Toubkal massif crossing passes over 3,500m before summiting Jbel Toubkal (4,167m). Challenging high-altitude trekking; full mule support and refuge/gîte nights.

The complete way to experience Morocco's highest mountains: rather than racing to the summit, you spend five days crossing the Toubkal massif, traversing remote valleys and Berber villages and sleeping at altitude so your body is ready for the top. The route links the Mizane and Azzaden valleys over the Tizi n'Aguelzim and Tizi n'Ouanoums passes (both above 3,500m), past the deep blue Lac d'Ifni, before the dawn summit push on day four.

Because you arrive at the refuge already acclimatised, summit success rates are far higher than on the express trek. Days are 5–7 hours of walking over genuine mountain terrain at 2,000–3,900m; mules carry all gear and a cook travels with the group. This is challenging trekking, but no ropework or technical climbing is involved outside winter.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Why do the 5-day circuit instead of the 2-day summit?

Acclimatisation and scenery. Crossing high passes for three days before the summit dramatically improves how you feel at 4,167m and how likely you are to top out, and you see remote valleys, Lac d'Ifni and Berber villages the express trek skips.

How many hours a day will I walk?

Typically 5–7 hours over mountain terrain, with the longest days crossing the high passes. Mules carry all luggage so you walk with just a day-pack.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. Expect 2–4 hours of light walking per day and one or two longer driving days. We pace days carefully and stop often.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
