Why Tangier

For trekkers arriving from Europe, Tangier is the front door to northern Morocco's mountains. It sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, Spain visible across the strait on a clear day, and an international city — administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956 — that drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it is the polished modern gateway you fly or sail into before turning inland: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, then a 2h drive south to Chefchaouen and the Rif trailheads of Talassemtane and Akchour, with Fes 4h on (or 2h by train). A day or two of kasbah lanes and sea air here makes the perfect prelude to walking the blue city's gorges.

What to see

Highlights of Tangier.

01

The Kasbah & medina

A first leg-stretch on arrival: climb the lanes from the Petit Socco to the kasbah museum (Dar el-Makhzen) for views over the harbour and Spain beyond.

02

Cap Spartel & the Hercules caves

The western tip of Africa, its lighthouse, and the eroded sea cave shaped like a map of the continent — a breezy coastal walk before heading into the Rif.

03

Literary Tangier walk

Hotel El Muniria where Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch, Café Hafa where Bowles took his tea above the sea, and the Librairie des Colonnes.

04

Gateway to Chefchaouen & the Rif

Two hours south the road climbs into the western Rif — the blue city, Talassemtane National Park and the Akchour gorge hikes all start from Tangier.

FAQ

Tangier — common questions.

Is Tangier worth a stop before trekking the Rif?+

Yes — it is the natural arrival point if you are coming from Spain, and the head of the northern trekking loop (Tangier → Chefchaouen → the Akchour gorges → Fes). As the most cosmopolitan of Morocco's old cities it is also an easy place to shake off the journey before the trail.

How long do you need in Tangier?+

Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch — before driving the two hours south to Chefchaouen and the Rif mountains.
