Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
Drop down the far side of the Tizi n'Tichka (2,260m) — the great road pass that severs the High Atlas — and the green trekking valleys give way to ochre hammada and palm-lined oued. Ouarzazate is the gateway where that crossing lands: the staging town for the Sahara, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road south. It is not a mountain destination in its own right but the dramatic threshold to the pre-Sahara, and the contrast after days on the cool ridgelines above Imlil is total. Forty minutes on, Aït Ben Haddou is Morocco's most photographed fortified ksar — a UNESCO earthen village that has stood in for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones at the neighbouring Atlas Studios.
What to see
The UNESCO earthen citadel that crowns the kasbah road; cross the riverbed and climb to the old granary for the panorama back over the towers and the desert beyond.
Working sound stages and weathered exterior sets — Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and more — strung across the desert flats outside town.
A crumbling 19th-century Glaoui palace on the old caravan track just below the pass — far quieter than Aït Ben Haddou and a worthy halt on the descent from the Atlas.
Two days east the road threads cliff-walled canyons and walnut oases — the one stretch of the desert route that returns you to real walking terrain.

Yes — it is the single most striking sight in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage ksar. Most coaches pause for an hour at midday; coming over the pass from the Atlas, it is well worth timing your arrival for the low light of sunrise or sunset, when the earthen walls glow.
In theory yes, but the four-hour haul each way over the Tizi n'Tichka makes it a punishing round trip that wastes the best light. It works far better as the first overnight on the crossing from the High Atlas, continuing toward the Sahara the following day.
