Overview

A three-day winter mountaineering ascent of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m) on snow and ice using crampons and an ice axe. Challenging — requires good fitness and a willingness to learn winter skills; led by qualified guides.

From roughly December to April, Toubkal becomes a true winter mountain: the south cirque fills with snow and ice and the 4,167m summit is reached only with crampons, an ice axe and proper technique. This three-day programme builds in time at the refuge to teach and practise winter skills — using crampons, ice-axe arrest, moving safely on snow slopes — before the summit attempt.

It is challenging but not technically extreme: there is no roped climbing on the normal winter route, but it is steep snow at altitude in cold, serious conditions, so good fitness and the right kit are essential. You climb with a qualified winter mountain guide at a low client-to-guide ratio. Crampons, ice axe and harness can be rented locally if you don't own them.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Do I need previous winter mountaineering experience?

No, but you must be a fit hill-walker and willing to learn. We run a crampon and ice-axe skills session before the summit, and keep ratios low. Prior winter or alpine experience is a bonus, not a requirement.

When is the Toubkal winter season?

Roughly December to April, depending on snowfall. We monitor conditions and avalanche risk closely and will move the summit day or turn around if it isn't safe.

Can I rent crampons and an ice axe?

Yes. Crampons, ice axe and harness are available to rent in Imlil. You should bring or rent stiff B2/B3 mountaineering boots that take crampons.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
